I always wear tights of some kind & shorts. Fishnets or real thin ones are the most comfortable b/c they save you from rink rash but aren't too hot. Don't spend a lot of dough, though, b/c the Velcro on your knee pads will get them all snagged up the 1st time you wear them. I don't like skorts for the most part b/c they are too thick for me & I get too hot & sweaty & uncomfortable. Target seems to have a pretty good selection of footless tights, which seemed pointless to me until I started skating... they're perfect for this. It has been really cold in the Colosseum over the winter, but after warm-ups, a lot of us start shedding layers!
As far as what to avoid... I would stay away from anything w/ buttons, snaps, or flappy pockets on your hip- like the widest part that you'll fall on the most. Padding might sound like a good idea, but it will only take one time of landing square on some dumb buckle... and the resulting buckle-shaped bruise... before you say to heck w/ the cutsey stuff.

You don't want anything you'll be having to adjust while you skate, so get stuff that fits well.
A lot of us have clippy things that we use to tie back the sleeves of our shirts so they are more like a tank top. I saw some by the registers at Dicks last weekend but I don't remember how much they were going for. You'll want to get a white & a black t-shirt or tank or whatever so that when you start scrimmaging w/ us you can change depending on which "team" you'll be on for that night of practice.
I also recommend getting some socks & cutting off the feet, & wearing them on your arms under your pads... believe me, you'll feel a lot better, & then you can have a clean(ish) layer between your skin & what will soon be STINKY pads!
